Lala Shyam Lal Gupta was born in the fall of 1912 in the family of a great patriot, an illustrious revolutionary and a dedicated teacher, Master Amir Chand. He was tried and hanged in the famous Lord Hardinge. Bomb Case in 1915.
He lost his father, Shri Niranjan Lal, when he was only four years old. He grew up under the blessings of his mother. Born in the family of staunch patriots, he inherited the benovelant quality and participated in Mahatma Gandhiji's Non-Cooperative Movement at a tender of 12.
He had his early education at the Commercial School and later completed his Diploma in Commerce from the Government Polytechnic School in Delhi.
Continuing with the fight for independence, Sri Shyamlal Gupta joined as a volunteer when Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru declared complete Independence as the National goal on the banks of Ravi in Lahore in 1928. He also took active part in the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was arrested.At the age of 20 he married Raj Rani.
Those were the days when the country was agog with patriotic fervor. Fiery speeches by leaders, public outrage against whites and the euphoria for independence prompted Sri Shyamlal to join Indian National congress as a volunteer and got an opportunity of working with Mahatma Gandhi from close proximity.
He started his career with his uncle Late Lala Sultan Chand on a meagre salary but his acumen in business made him the business partner. In 1937, he started his own publishing house S. Chand & Company. This was a plant which was nurtured by him with zeal and passion, endurance and foresight and which is now in full bloom and is spreading its fragrance everywhere. In 1945, he established Shyam Lal Charitable Trust to help the cause of education and medicine. In 1964 the trust set up Shyam lal College.
In the recognition of the great services rendered by him to the nation in the field of education, health and publishing, the Government of India honoured him with the award of Padmashree in 1969.
Born on July 27, 1939, Shri Rajendra Kumar Gupta, was the Managing Director of S. Chand & Company Ltd. was a graduate from the University of Delhi.
He was the vice-chairman of Capexl Books Panel and former member of the National Book Development Council, Government of India, New Delhi, and had held similar seats in many other apex organizations.
Shri Gupta was also the chairman of the governing body of the Shyama Lal College, the first College to come up in the trans-Yamuna area under the University of Delhi. Before
heading the S.Chand & Company, he was the vice chairman of Capexl Books panel and was former member of the National Book Development Council, Government of India and had held similar seats in many other apex organisations. Sri Gupta was also the chairman of the governing body of the Shyam Lal College, the first college to come up in the Trans Yamuna area under the University of Delhi.
He had a keen interest for Indian scientists. For this noble cause, The contributed a sum of Rs. 25 lakhs to establish the Shyam Lal Gupta Memorial Library at the American Institute of Indian Studies at Gurgaon, Haryana.
He was also instrumental in collaborating with Encyclopedia Britannica, UK, for procuring exclusive distribution rights for their products in the Indian sub-continent.
Moreover he kept on organising seminars and symposiums on quality education at the school
level.
As a Managing Director he spearaheaded in bringing S.Chand &Company to high stature. He never compromised with the dreams of his
legendry father Late Shyam Lal Gupta. His endeavour in achieving the goal& mission is commendable. We are deeply engraved on his demise but the memories are still vivid at our heart.
Born on December 12, 1948, Shri Ravindra Kumar Gupta is the son of the visionary man Sri Shyam Lal Gupta. Under the stern guidance of his father he completed his education in the University of Delhi.
Along with conventional degree he was taught the modalities of publishing industry and the secrets of sucess. As a first step in the ladder, he joined as an apprentice to start his career. Since then he has been climbing the ladder with out taking a step aback. Under his guidance the company has achieved many laurels and there are many to follow.
He is a sports-freak as well. When the Green Baize game was not getting ample support, he took up the courage to initiate the Invitational Open Snooker Tournament in India from 1997. Previously such tournaments were conducted only in the big cities. He took it to the Himalayas - Mussoorie. Players from all over the world participate in these events to augment support and interest, so far as the Green Baize concerned. His endeavour is to continue with these yearly sports bonanza for the benefit of not only the players, but also for the viewers of televisions.
Incidentally, his passion for sports and music gets a boost from his wife Savita, who was a badminton player of merit in her college days and is a keen follower of sports as well as music and other social curriculum.
