OBC QUOTA A BOON OR A BANE |
|
The
Supreme Court of India in its landmark judgment of April 10th on OBC
quota has barred reservations in Post-Graduate courses and has excluded
creamy layer from the benefit. This was long over due as the basic
purpose of reservation is the social and economic upliftment of the
backward classes.
The government interpreted that reservation quota will cover
Post-Graduate courses and have issued orders on 20th April that OBC
students would get reservation in
Post-Graduate courses including IIMs.
The whole situation is fluid as an association has already moved Delhi
High Court restraining the government from providing quota for OBC
students in higher educational institutions, including IIMs. The Kolkata
High Court has already stayed interviews of candidates in IIM Kolkata
under 27% OBC but the institute went ahead with the interviews saying
that it would honour the court's order by withholding the results. The
government in the meantime moved the Supreme Court seeking suspension of
the restrained order.
A chaotic condition is prevailing for implementing 27% OBC in university
admission also as infrastructure and funds are not available and the
government is compelling to implement it in one go to gain political
advantage in the elections slated early next year. The controversy of
implementing OBC reservation in Post-Graduation courses is also going on
and it appears that continuing with SC / ST and OBC reservations will
encourage people to aspire for backwardness and it is likely to push the
country towards a cast divided society instead of bringing forward
socially and educationally backward classes.
We have full faith in judiciary and wish that the government should also
respect judiciary which is capable of solving ticklish problems like
reservations to logical ending.
